Dermabrasion Treatment

Dermabrasion is a technique that removes the outer layers of skin cells by mechanical abrasion to promote the formation of new collagen and skin with fewer wrinkles and a tighter appearance.

Dermabrasion is a surgical technique that involves removing the outer skin cells by a mechanical process of sanding. The remaining deep skin cells and structures respond by laying down new collagen and skin cells that result in a firmer and wrinkle free surface.

What can be achieved?

At Artiste Plastic Surgery Dermabrasion is performed for the following reasons:

  • As an adjunct to facelift surgery
  • Marionette lines around the mouth
  • Vertical lines around the lips

Action of Dermabrasion

The skin consists of the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is made up of up to 7 layers and the dermis two layers.

The process of dermabrasion physically removes the epidermis, and upper layer of the dermis to encourage the formation of new skin and formation of new collagen that is tighter. The result is skin that is tighter, with fewer blemishes and fine lines.

Discoloration and pigmentation changes may result after dermabrasion. A full list of potential complications will be discussed during your consultation.

Local dental blocks are used to anaesthetize the peri-oral area.

As a stand-alone procedure it can be office based or as day surgery an adjunct to a surgical procedure. The skin that is left behind after abrasion weeps for the first 36 hours and in the following week begins to recover depending on the depth of abrasion.
