How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost in Sydney

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or otherwise known as Blepharoplasty is surgery around the skin of the eyes and in particular the eyelids. As we age three distinct things happen. We lose facial volume, the skin loosens and ligaments begin to weaken and this causes the eyelid deformity or ageing eye.

What is the eyelid deformity?

The upper eyelid skin becomes loose and redundant and this can interfere with opening of the eye. Orbital fat can bulge into the upper eyelid causing a heaviness to the area.

The lower eyelid fat bulges from the orbital septum and this creates lower eyelid bags, the skin is loose and the orbital malar ligament weakens. This results in hollowness and a distinct dark eye circle before the start of the cheek.

What can a Blepharoplasty do?

A blepharoplasty can correct the eyelid deformity and ageing eye by removing excess skin, addressing the bulges of fat and tightening the ligament. A blepharoplasty will smooth the eyelid region and remove heaviness on the upper eyelid.

Who gets Eyelid Surgery?

If you have excess upper eyelid skin or a heaviness to the brow region an upper eyelid blepharoplasty will address the problem. This often occurs in your 50s and beyond.

Those with lower eyelid bags, dark circles under the eye and wrinkles and lines around the eye a lower eyelid blepharoplasty will address these concerns. This occurs in your late 40s and beyond.

In the younger patient the orbital malar ligament may be genetically prone to weakening and these patients have dark circles in their teens, 20s and 30s. This deformity is called the tear trough deformity and is not a ageing phenomenon. The solution though is a lower eyelid blepharoplasty to restore the ligament and blend the eyelid cheek junction. Non surgical dermal filler may also be used to correct the tear trough.

Upper Eyelid:

Pinch Blepharoplasty: Involves removing a pinch of the upper eyelid skin (up to 15mm), and can be done in the office under LA. This is suitable for all age groups.

Conventional Blepharoplasty: Involves skin and muscle removal and breach of the orbital septum to remove excess fat. This enables the upper eyelid area to be reshaped and this is performed as day surgery. This is suitable for all age groups.

Tarsal Fixation Blepharoplasty: Is often used in revision blepharoplasty or occasionally primary blepharoplasty to secure the eyelid crease in an optimal position. The approach is one for a conventional blepharoplasty and incudes suturing the tarsal plate to the levator aponeurosis, orbicularis and skin.

Asian Blepharoplasty: In the Asian eyelid a lack of upper eyelid crease is the distinguishable feature in comparison to the western eye. An Asian eye can be westernised with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty by creating a crease with tarsal fixation sutures.

Lower Eyelid:

Pinch Blepharoplasty: A lower eyelid crease pinch can remove up to 7mm of skin and can be done in the office under LA. This is suitable for a mild deformity.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty: Involves accessing the orbital septum and fat compartments with no external skin incision and tighteneing the eyelid with a canthoplasty suture. A pinch blepharoplasty s often also done to remove excess skin. This is suitable for a moderate eye deformity.

Skin and Muscle Flap Blepharoplasty: This is the gold standard lower eyelid blepharoplasty that involves a skin muscle flap to access the ligament and fat compartments and correction of the aged deformity. Excess skin is removed and the eyelid ligament is tightened.

Canthoplasty: A canthoplasty is re-shaping of the canthus (lateral ligament) to tighten the eyelid, prevent post operative ectropion and scleral show and support the eyelid while it is healing. Various canthoplasty maneovers can be employed-Canthopexy, pennant canthoplasty, tarsal strip, formal canthoplasty, drill hole canthoplasty. What is the downtime of Eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is day surgery and the recovery is relatively quick. The face and in particular the eye are prone to bruising due to the intricate vascular anatomy of the skin. As such bruising is normal in the first 5 days.

7-10 days is the time it will take to be social and able to return to work. At this stage the bruising is settled or concealable with make up.
