How Injections Work

Anti-wrinkle injections prevent the release of the neurotransmitter Acetyl Choline in the synapse of nerve endings in proximity to muscle motor end plates.

Most wrinkles are formed by the underlying movement of facial muscles, by preventing the contraction of the muscle through anti-wrinkle injections the muscle cannot contract and no wrinkle formation is the desired result.

The muscles around the face act in concert and opposition, to the functions of the underlying structures of the eye, nose and mouth. Together with expression of emotion such as fear, anger and happiness the facial muscles contract in unique ways. An understanding of the structures of the face and this muscle structure and function is important when using anti-wrinkle injections to achieve balance in injecting, not freezing a face but minimising wrinkles, opening up the eyelids with a brow lift and giving a overall freshness to your face. As a specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Jack Zoumaras will ensure that your anti-wrinkle injections are not just anti-wrinkle but take advantage of the unique muscle harmony that only a Plastic Surgeon would know.

It is advisable to avoid physical activities for 24 hours post injection and avoid lying flat for 2 hours post injection to prevent diffusion of the injection.

Anti-wrinkle injections are contra-indicated in pregnancy.

Anti-wrinkle injections have a low side effect profile in comparison to surgery. Side effects include bleeding, bruising and headache at the injection site. Other side effects that are specific for location will be discussed during your consultation. Rare allergy has been reported.

The toxic dose of anti-wrinkle injections approach 10,000 Units. At any one sitting your never getting more than 30-50 units in the face or 100 units under the arms.

They last for between 3 to 6 months depending upon location, dosage and previous use.

A small gauge needle is used to inject the toxin into the facial muscles. The use of ice and local anaesthetic numbing cream help to alleviate the pain of the injection.

It takes 24 hours for the active ingredients to bind to its target and prevent neurotransmitter release. Muscle contraction is then affected over the next 4 days. It is possible to see affect after two days but most people wont get full affect for one week.
