Results vary and are illustrated as a guide only. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. These risks will be discussed with you in detail. A second opinion is beneficial and advised. The use of the words confidence, self-esteem, comfort, harmony, and enhancement are words that our patients use when interacting with us during their plastic surgery journey. How you will feel after receiving plastic surgery varies between individuals and depends on several things including psychological and physical factors. Our internal research is based on how patients in our practice feel after surgery. This research has been presented internationally and published in peer reviewed journals (see below). It is not the intention of this information to deceive you into having surgery nor to convince you to undergo cosmetic surgery, but rather to arm you with the knowledge required to make informed decisions.

If you have discovered that one side of your face seems to show wrinkles and laxity faster, you’re not alone. It’s actually a common sign of aging and is rarely a cause for concern. In the majority of cases, it’s simply down to your lifestyle and habits.

Here’s everything you need to know.

The Usual Causes

Sun Exposure

UV exposure is a common cause for your skin showing signs of aging. And while most people remember to put on suncream if they head out into the sunshine, many forget about driving. Over years of driving, one side of your face is exposed to the sun which can contribute to one-sided wrinkles and laxity.

Sleep Habits

Side sleepers in particular will favour one side when asleep, and often it’s not something that is controlled or consciously chosen. But in doing so, you’ll experience sleep wrinkles that are caused from the pressure of your face pushing down on your pillow for seven to eight hours per night. These are often more prominent on the side that you favour.

Muscle Habits

As humans, we’re creatures of habit and these repetitive actions tend to favour one side of the face. From chewing on one side to holding your phone to one ear, these habits can lead to asymmetrical wrinkles and increased laxity over time.

Genetics

For some, genetics will play a part in one side of your face showing wrinkles and laxity faster than the other. You may have asymmetry in your bone structure and muscle imbalance that becomes more prominent as you age.

If you are interested in learning more about how facial structures change over time, Artiste also explains how deeper facial tissues and ligaments are affected by ageing in its guide to the High SMAS facelift procedure.

Natural Ways to Slow Uneven Aging

When it comes to slowing uneven aging, there are several steps that you can take.

  • Applying SPF to your entire face every day, even if you are simply commuting to work.
  • Consider purchasing a UV protective film for your car window if you drive a lot.
  • Being mindful of your sleep habits and avoid sleeping on your favoured side if possible.
  • Try to change the side of your face that you hold your phone to during calls.
  • Use upwards and outwards strokes when applying face products such as moisturisers.

Improving the appearance of asymmetry is not something that can be achieved overnight. The key is consistency and it may take several weeks or months to start seeing the effects of your efforts.

Cosmetic Treatment Options

If your wrinkles and laxity are moderate to severe, you are yet to see results from natural techniques, or simply want faster results, cosmetic treatment options are available. These include:

  • Anti-wrinkle injections that work to relax the side of your face that is showing more signs of aging.
  • Fillers and other non-surgical facial treatments that can restore a plumpness to your face in problem areas.
  • Resurfacing treatments that work to improve the texture, tone and overall appearance of your skin.

For more significant skin laxity, a facelift may also be considered. Facelift surgery is designed to reposition deeper facial tissues and address changes such as wrinkles, loose skin and jowling.

FAQs

Why is my Face Becoming More Asymmetrical as I Age?

Face asymmetry is a normal and common sign of aging and occurs due to both genetic and lifestyle factors. Changes to facial volume, skin elasticity and deeper facial structures can all become more noticeable over time. You can learn more about how these changes are addressed on Artiste’s facelift information page.

How do I Treat Wrinkles on one Side of my Face?>

The appearance of wrinkles and skin laxity can be improved through natural treatment options such as wearing SPF, changing your sleeping habits and creating a consistent skincare routine, as well as cosmetic treatment options such as anti-wrinkle injections and fillers. For the latter, the team at Artiste offer a range of non-surgical facial treatments.
