Key Differences Between Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

Upper and lower eyelid surgeries are tailored to different concerns and use different techniques. In this article we’ll provide a general comparison of the two procedures, focusing on recovery, candidacy, and if the 2 procedures are viable in combination surgery.

How does it work?

Upper Eyelid Surgery: Upper eyelid surgery focuses on removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid, allowing the scar to be well-concealed. Through this incision, the surgeon removes or repositions excess tissue and tightens the remaining skin. This procedure can also address functional issues, such as impaired vision due to excess skin.

Lower Eyelid Surgery: Lower eyelid surgery primarily aims to reduce puffiness and bags under the eyes and smooth any hollowness. In other words, it is about the redistribution of fat. The surgeon makes an incision just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid to remove or redistribute fat deposits, tighten muscles, and remove excess skin if necessary.

How Long Will Recovery Take After Surgery?

Upper Eyelid Surgery: Recovery from upper eyelid surgery is generally straightforward. Patients can expect swelling and bruising around the eyes, which usually subsides within one to two weeks. Stitches are typically removed within a week, and most people can return to their normal activities within 10 to 14 days. Full recovery, including the final appearance of the eyes, can take a few months as residual swelling gradually diminishes. Risks are possible as plastic surgery is invasive.

Lower Eyelid Surgery: Recovery from lower eyelid surgery can be slightly longer due to the more delicate nature of the lower eyelid area. Swelling and bruising can last for two to three weeks, and some patients may experience temporary dryness or irritation of the eyes. Stitches, if used, are usually removed within a week, but complete recovery can take several months. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and protect their eyes from the sun during the healing process.

Remember that recovery timelines will be different from person to person. Factors like overall health, age, and adherence to post-operative care instructions are crucial in how quickly you heal. Some may experience minimal swelling and return to daily activities sooner, but others might take longer to feel fully recovered. Always follow your surgeon’s advice and attend all follow-up appointments so the healing process is smooth.

Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Candidacy for eyelid surgery isn’t just about having specific physical concerns. Rather, it’s more about mental, physical, and emotional preparedness to undergo an invasive procedure.

Here are some factors that would make someone a “candidate”

Physical Health

A good candidate for eyelid surgery is in overall good health with no significant medical conditions that might hinder their healing. The surgeon will conduct a thorough assessment of the individual, ask about medication they’re taking, prior medical conditions, etc.

Mental and Emotional Readiness

Eyelid surgery, like any cosmetic procedure, requires careful consideration. You should approach the decision with an understanding of what surgery can and cannot achieve.

Unrealistic expectations or viewing surgery as a fix for deeper emotional concerns can lead to dissatisfaction. A consultation with the surgeon may involve discussions about body image, and in some cases, screening for conditions like body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

Knowledge and Tempered Expectations

Understanding the limitations of eyelid surgery is critical. It may help improve visible changes, but it cannot prevent future ageing or guarantee permanent results. A good candidate is fully aware of this fact, and also potential risks, recovery process, and the need to follow proper post-operative care.

Combining Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

It is possible to combine both in a single procedure, but whether it’s appropriate for you will depend on your surgeon’s assessment. They will assess factors like your overall health, skin condition, facial structure, and the like, to determine if the approach is suitable.

Conclusion

Deciding between eyelid surgery, whether upper, lower, or a combination of both should be carefully considered. Remember that results will vary depending on specific individual factors and there’s no such thing as guaranteed outcomes.

Remember, surgery is a significant decision, and feeling informed, comfortable, and prepared is crucial. If you’re exploring eyelid surgery, consider all aspects of your physical and mental health and be sure to communicate openly with your surgeon.
