There is a growing focus in the cosmetic surgery industry on balanced and refined aesthetics where the face is concerned. Facial harmony is one of the key principles of modern cosmetic surgery, something vitally important to surgeons and patients alike.

The chin, jawline and cheeks work together to shape the overall look of the face, and it is important to understand facial proportions, facial structure and facial symmetry when making decisions relating to cosmetic surgery. At Artiste, we are committed to patient outcomes that focus on natural beauty and existing proportions. Read on to find out more about facial harmony and how it could play a role in uncovering your natural beauty.

What is Facial Harmony?

Facial harmony is the way in which the features of the face all work together to create a cohesive and harmonious whole image. It is a focus on the balance of the face rather than a focus on perfecting individual features. Each part of the face (upper, mid and lower) contributes differently to ageing and overall appearance; harmony is when each third is proportionate and has a smooth transition to the next part.

True symmetry of the face is a rare feature, and not essential to facial harmony or commonly held notions of beauty. Many faces that we consider to be beautiful have small areas of asymmetry that only add to our positive perception. Balance in the face is about proportion, alignment and contour, not perfect mirroring.

Smooth transitions between the different areas of the face are a sign of strong facial harmony. Consider the links between the cheek and jaw, then the jaw and neck. Aesthetically speaking, we see these angles as key: cheekbone angle of projection, jawline angle and chin to neck angle. Harsh transitions can disrupt the sense of facial harmony, as can undefined transitions.

Why is Proportion Important to Facial Harmony?

Classic principles of aesthetics, including the golden ratio, can be applied to the face when we consider facial harmony and ideas of beauty. The golden ratio in beauty is an idea that the features of the face are at their most beautiful when proportions align closely to a mathematical ratio of 1.618. Measurements between features must align with this ratio to fit the idea of aesthetic beauty and facial balance.

In terms of facial proportion, we can weigh up the vertical thirds of the face (forehead, mid-face and chin/jaw/neck) in relation to the horizontal proportions (cheek width, jawline width and chin prominence.) Imbalances can affect the perception of facial beauty and harmony in many ways. If the chin is weak, the nose can look bigger. If cheeks are full, a narrower jaw can be accentuated. A strong jawline influences the perception of masculinity or femininity.

When looking to achieve facial harmony through cosmetic procedures, proportion is vastly more important than the size of individual features.

How is Facial Harmony Important to Cosmetic Surgery?

Facial harmony should be the guiding factor in surgical planning and decision-making. A cosmetic surgeon should always consider facial harmony in order to ensure that enhancements made to the face maintain a natural look without drawing all the attention. Without this consideration, features that have undergone surgery can become isolated, standing out too much and bringing imbalance to the face.

When a patient is erring between procedures, the idea of facial harmony can help with coming to a decision. Implants, contouring and lifts can have different impacts on the harmony of facial features, and a good surgeon should be able to outline these clearly to patients.

A skilled surgeon such as Dr Jack Zoumaras can use knowledge of facial harmony to prevent over-correcting or disproportionately adjusting features. It is critical to create structural cohesion in the profile view as well as the front and angled views.

Achieving Facial Harmony With Plastic Surgery

Chin procedures

Chin augmentation can help to balance the nose and jaw. Procedures on the chin enhance its definition and improve the balance of the facial third when done in consideration of proportion. Correcting retrusion can strengthen the whole facial profile.

Jawline procedures

These procedures include jawline contouring and implants which can adjust the structure of the jaw and add definition to the area where it is lacking. Liposculpture and neck tightening procedures can refine the angles in the lower face. In order to achieve a clean transition from the jaw to neck, a surgeon must be careful to consider adjustments made to the jaw.

Cheek procedures

Cheek procedures can make adjustments to the mid-section of the face. Implants can add projection to the existing bone structure, and fat grafting can add soft volume to the mid-face. In contrast, buccal fat can be removed to slim and contour the face.

Combination approaches

Sometimes it is appropriate to work on multiple areas in order to harmonise multiple areas of the face at the same time. Some typical transformation combinations include chin augmentation with jawline contouring, cheek implants and buccal fat removal, and facelift and mid-face volume restoration.

Non-surgical options

There are non-surgical options too, for adjusting the harmony of the face. Dermal fillers can help with temporary rebalancing for patients not sure if they want to commit to surgery. Skin tightening technologies can subtly enhance the face without the commitment to a facelift.

Conclusion – The Significance of Facial Harmony in Surgical Decisions

Facial harmony is the foundation on which we build our beautiful, natural-looking cosmetic outcomes for our patients. Our in-depth understanding of facial proportions ensures that any enhancements are refined and there is not a perception of overcorrection.
