Possible Complications From A Deep Place Facelift Surgery

Model featured in photography

A deep plane facelift is a facelift procedure aimed at addressing the signs of ageing by repositioning the underlying muscle and fat layers of the face. While it offers significant changes, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential complications to consider. In this blog, we discuss general information about the risks associated with this procedure.

1. General Surgical Risks

Like any surgical procedure, a deep plane facelift carries general risks, including:

  • Infection: Despite sterilised environments, there is always a chance of post-operative infection.
  • Bleeding: Excessive bleeding or haematoma (collection of blood under the skin) may occur, necessitating additional procedures.
  • Anaesthesia Reactions: Rare but possible adverse reactions to anaesthesia can include nausea, dizziness, or more severe complications.

2. Nerve Damage

One of the unique aspects of a deep plane facelift is that it works closer to the facial nerve. While the technique aims to preserve nerve integrity, there is a slight risk of:

  • Temporary Weakness: Facial muscle weakness that typically resolves within a few weeks or months.
  • Permanent Nerve Injury: Rare cases may result in permanent loss of facial muscle function.

3. Scarring

While surgeons strive to place incisions in discreet areas, visible scarring can still occur. Factors such as individual healing ability, skin type, and post-operative care contribute to the final appearance of scars. However, the risk of scarring after a deep plane facelift is generally considered to be low, with several studies indicating favorable outcomes. According to a comprehensive systematic review published in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, the overall complication rate for SMAS facelift techniques, including deep plane facelifts, was relatively low at 8.33%.

4. Skin Irregularities

Some patients may experience skin-related complications, such as:

  • Skin Necrosis: Skin necrosis is a rare but serious complication that can occur after a deep plane facelift. While the deep plane technique generally has a lower risk of skin necrosis compared to more superficial facelift methods, it can still occur in some cases.
  • Pigmentation Changes: Temporary or permanent changes in skin colour around the incision site.
  • Contour Irregularities: Uneven skin or dimpling may occur due to healing or fat displacement.

5. Prolonged Recovery

While most patients recover within a few weeks, some may experience prolonged healing times. Factors influencing recovery include age, overall health, and adherence to post-operative care instructions.

6. Unsatisfactory Results

In rare cases, patients may feel their results do not meet expectations. This could lead to dissatisfaction and the consideration of revision surgery, which carries its own set of risks and challenges.

Minimising Risks

To reduce the likelihood of complications, you may consider the following:

  • Choose an Experienced Surgeon: Select a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in deep plane facelift procedures.
  • Disclose Medical History: Provide a comprehensive medical history, including any medications or habits such as smoking, that may impact recovery.
  • Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhering to your surgeon’s recovery plan, including avoiding strenuous activities and keeping incisions clean, is crucial for optimal healing.
