You may consider a facelift for different reasons, be it changing the way fine lines and wrinkles appear, or repositioning deeper tissues. This article covers several aspects of how a facelift may affect facial shape and discuss the importance of understanding the risks, benefits, and realistic outcomes.
May Reduce the Appearance of Wrinkles and Lines
Wrinkles form when the deeper layers of skin become stretched and overwhelmed by the muscle and underlying tissues. Wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, sun exposure, and repetitive facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or squinting. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner, making it more prone to developing lines and creases.
A deep plane facelift may reduce the marionette lines and wrinkles in your face. It involves lifting and repositioning the underlying muscle and tissues. But please take note that results are not guaranteed outcomes for one patient may not necessarily be the same as for another.
Firmness
Early facelift techniques may have been focused with skin-tightening, which led to what people may know as a “pulled” or “windblown” look. Modern techniques like the ponytail facelift, are minimally invasive, however, and involves alterations only in certain areas of the skin.
A facelift surgery may achieve firmness as it repositions and tightens facial structures rather than just slowly relying on tension. This may lead to a reduction in the appearance of loose skin, and redistributes excess skin to change the shape of the neck and jawline.
May last for years
A deep plane facelift may last longer than other facelift methods because it addresses the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system).
However, you should recognise that no facelift, including the deep plane technique can stop the inevitable effects of ageing. Genetics, lifestyle choices, skin quality, and environmental exposure will still affect how your face changes in the years following surgery.
It is possible for deep plane facelift results to last for 10 years, but this is not a guarantee. Every patient will have varying experiences.
Deciding to go through with an invasive procedure like a deep plane facelift should be done with consideration of the risks, achievable / non-achievable outcomes, and potential effects.
