Droopy lower eyelids, bags under the eyes and draping skin that obscures vision may be concerns for people getting eyelid surgery in Sydney. These concerns are normal because the muscle and skin around the eyes weaken as we age.
If you’re considering this surgery, know that it entails risk and complications. But understanding how long it lasts may help you determine (alongside proper consultation and assessment from your surgeon) whether it’s the right choice.
How long do eyelid surgery results last?
A quick internet search might tell you that results from eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can last anywhere between 7 to 15 years. But the reality is that no one can stop the natural processes of ageing.
As we age, the body produces less collagen. This is due to the lowering efficiency of fibroblasts or specialised cells in the dermis responsible for producing collagen. Their ability to synthesise collagen gradually declines, resulting in a reduction in skin elasticity and firmness, which may lead to droopiness over time.
So, while eyelid surgery may be able to help lift the skin around the eyelids, it’s important to understand it cannot halt the ageing process entirely, whether it’s an upper or lower blepharoplasty
