Can Eyelid Surgery Be Redone?

Possibly the most alluring and expressive feature that we have are our eyes. Besides their ability to convey a complete range of emotions, they are also among the earliest observable indicators of ageing, particularly when the skin around the eye area starts to droop or puff out.

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be a good remedy to improves the appearance of the skin in the eye area.

Eyelid Surgery: When You Should Consider Getting One?

As people age, skin becomes less elastic and fat tissue move, causing the eyelids to sag and droop. By removing extra and repositioning facial fat, eyelid surgery helps give a younger, much more alert appearance.

When you observe one or more of the following, getting eyelid surgery may be a viable choice:

  • Swollen bags under your eyes
  • Droopy upper eyelids that reach the lash line
  • Upper eyelids that appear heavy or swollen
  • Dry eyes caused by improper positioning of the lower eyelids
  • Poor peripheral vision
  • Persistent forehead discomfort due to brow strain
  • Irritated eyelid skin due to constant friction
  • Limited surface area for eye makeup

Blepharoplasty: Can It Be Redone?

A patient may require a redo of their blepharoplasty for a variety of reasons, but the majority of the time, they opt for this procedure because they are dissatisfied with the results of earlier plastic surgery.

Eyelid surgery works on a highly delicate part of the face. Therefore, it should be performed only by an experienced and highly-skilled plastic surgeon with a reliable blepharoplasty technique to prevent complications and achieve the most optimal results.

From mild scarring to serious eyelid prolapse that compromises the integrity of the eye and its capacity to function properly, eyelid surgery complications can vary significantly from each person.

The following are the most frequent reasons for getting a blepharoplasty revision:

  1. Scarring

When the skin of the eyelids heals too quickly following surgery, this might result in obvious scars and lumps around the incision sites. When scarring is the reason to get eyelid reshaping, scar revision techniques can manage the issue effectively.

  1. Incomplete Eyelid Surgery

Another issue may develop when the initial eyelid surgery fails to address the main problems adequately. In this case, insufficient skin was removed, and the muscle that raises the eyelid was not tightened enough. As a result, the eyelids frequently seem swollen and weary, and the upper field of vision may be blurry.

  1. Removal of Too Much Skin or Fat

The patient may experience significant problems if too much skin is removed during the first eyelid surgery. The most serious consequences result from modifications to the lower eyelid’s shape, which cause retraction and increased eye exposure.

This can be seen, for instance, when the lower eyelid descends below the coloured iris after too much removal of the soft tissue and skin from the lower eyelid. As a result, the white sclera (the outer white layer of the eyeball) becomes too visible.

While eyelid surgery can possibly be redone, ensuring a safe procedure by finding a reliable and highly-experienced surgeon minimises the risk of complications and avoids additional expenses.
