Neck lift surgery (also known as platysmaplasty) involves the removal of excess skin and tissues in the neck and the tightening the neck muscles to create a sleeker, leaner appearance and smoother jawline.
When performing this invasive surgery, surgeons often take into account factors such as skin elasticity, fat distribution, and the position of underlying muscles.
This article offers an overview of how a neck lift surgery may be performed, including some of the techniques to consider depending on the patient’s preferences and the assessment conducted by their surgeon.
What are the steps of a neck lift procedure?
1. Anesthesia
You will be given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to keep you comfortable during the surgery.
2. Incisions
Your surgeon will make incisions strategically around your ears, hairline, and under your chin. These incisions will allow your surgeon access to the deep layers of tissue and muscles in your neck.
A traditional neck lift incision typically begins in the hairline at the level of the sideburns, progresses down and around the ear, and ends in the posterior hair. Fat from the loose, hanging skin on the neck area, also known as “jowls” and can be sculpted or redistributed. The tissue beneath the skin of the neck is repositioned, and the platysma muscle is tightened.
Another option is a thread lift procedure, in which temporary sutures are used to produce a subtle but visible “lift” in the skin. Instead of surgically removing the patient’s loose facial skin, the cosmetic surgeon simply suspends it by stitching up portions of it.
3. Closing the Incisions
Sutures and skin glue are used to close incision lines. Sutures may dissolve or require removal after a few days. When the incision lines from a neck lift have healed, they are usually well hidden within the hairline and the natural contours of the ear.
After the surgery is complete, you will be taken to a recovery area, where you will be closely monitored. Once you are awake and your vital signs are stable, you will be able to go home. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions and when you can return to your normal activities. It is essential to follow these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and uncomplicated recovery.
If you are exploring neck lift surgery as an option, it is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional to understand the procedure and what it may involve.
